The Centers for Equality East and West have been given a grant from the South Dakota Department of Health to provide HIV/AIDS prevention and testing services to the LGBT community in South Dakota. While our grant is to provide services to the Gay community, we also make these services available to anyone upon request.
The Centers have a wide variety of information, pamphlets, books, videos and other resources available to the public concerning HIV/AIDS prevention and risk reduction. We have trained individuals available to do presentations, workshops, lectures, etc about HIV/AIDS prevention and risk reduction.
The Centers provide free and confidential HIV testing and counseling at the Centers everyday. We are also available to provide testing and counseling at Health Fairs and other events as requested.
There are two very important factors of which everyone should be aware to reduce the spread of aids and to protect themselves from infection.
The first is to know your status. This can be done easily by simply getting tested periodically. The CDC recommends that everyone be tested. If you know whether you are negative or positive you can know whether or not you are infecting others. Testing at The Centers is a non-invasive oral swab.
Secondly is to know how your own behavior puts you at risk for contracting HIV/AIDS. We have been fortunate to have partnered with the University of Wyoming for their Rural AIDS Prevention Project.
The Wyoming Rural Aids Prevention Project is an interactive internet program that can help to let individuals know of their level of risk for contracting HIV. It is fun and takes about 20 minutes and can let you know what your risk factors are and how to reduce them. We highly recommend this program to everyone who might in any way be at risk. YOU NEED TO KNOW AND TO PROTECT YOURSELF!
